Monday, July 10, 2023, will forever be etched in my mind as one of the most breathtaking days of my life. It was the day I was lucky enough to be present from the very first day of the volcano’s eruption here in Iceland. It all started with a phone call from one of my good friends Jeroen. He told me that something exciting was about to happen and that there might be a volcanic eruption. I jumped into my motorhome when I was in Egilstaðir and hurried towards Reykjavik. It was the Wednesday before and we kept an eye on the live cameras for days to see if the eruption came. And finally something happened while I was staring at the cameras, the ground started to turn black and smoke came. There was no doubt – something was up. I immediately called my companion and our joy and excitement could not be hidden. After so many days of waiting, our impatience was finally rewarded. Adrenaline was pumping and our bodies were filled with an electric sensation. We rushed towards the P2 car park with other volcano enthusiasts. The trip was tough, but it was all worth it. At first, we kept a certain distance and I shared my impressions in my YouTube video. As we saw that it was safe enough, and after receiving advice from the rescuers, we moved further towards the eruption area. Although my memories are a bit hazy, I clearly remember being close to the eruption, possibly about 200-300 meters away. My adrenaline was whipping through my body and I was determined to capture every moment. The rescuers arrived and informed us that we would soon have to pack up and move out again. Witnessing the volcanic eruption from day one was nothing short of extraordinary. Although I had already had the honour of seeing the Fagradalsfjall volcano erupt back in 2021, this experience was something very special. It was as if I had become part of creation itself. The volcano showed itself in all its splendour and power, and it was a humbling reminder of the greatness of nature. On the way back to the RV I experienced problems with my hips and the pain became almost unbearable. I was eventually rescued and I share the whole story in detail in my YouTube video. Words cannot describe the emotional roller coaster I was on, but I hope you will take the time to watch the video and share the experience with me. Being there from the first day of the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano was an honour and a gift. It was an intense, surreal and unforgettable experience. Witnessing the power of nature and the creation of new earth has given me a deeper understanding of our place in the world. I hope my video and this account have managed to capture just a fraction of the fascination, joy and awe I felt during this unique experience.
